Where is My Mind?

new angles on life

Hello Friends,

Quite the storm rolled through Oregon last night, shaking trees, rattling windows, and cutting out power. The power is back on this morning, for which I’m grateful.

Just as I’m grateful to have a warm bed, and blankets to curl up in through the night.

This morning, I’m drinking tea and writing while listening to Maxence Cyrin play piano. It’s a cover of the old Pixie’s song, Where is My Mind?

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground

Try this trick and spin it, yeah

Your head will collapse

If there's nothing in it

And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind?

dark silhouettes of pigeons on wires, storm clouds gathering behind.

The piano rolls over me. A new story unfolds on the pixelated page.

My mind is with my characters this morning, as they roll down a cold gray sidewalk in a city I lived in for decades, but have not seen in years.

And that’s the way things are for writers. We live in multiple worlds at once. We straddle space and time. We drink music, tea, and rain, and pour it out onto the page. Our feet are often in the air, and our heads on the ground, seeking new angles, and different perspectives on life.

My characters face the problems we all face, at one time or another. Will they make it through okay? That’s for them—and my subconscious—to decide.

But mostly? I like to write stories where people make it through. Because that’s what I want for us all. A way to make it through the storms.

Together.

Be well — Thorn

ps: the Bookshop Witch ebook is now up for preorder! Supply chain issues are rocking publishing right now, so print books are delayed. I’ll let you know as soon as those are available, too!
