Resting is

a part of life

Hello friends,

I work for myself, and have for decades. That means I work seven days a week. This is good because it offers me flexibility. If I’m having a bad day with my autoimmune disorder, for example, I can work a couple of hours and stop. It gives me the option to take a walk. Eat some lunch. Take a nap if I really need to.

It’s also bad because, when you work for yourself, the work is endless. And if an idea strikes at 8pm, my office is right there, waiting. When to stop? What is enough?

This also means I tend to not take holidays. I enjoy my work, for the most part—especially writing books, teaching, and my handful of spiritual direction clients—though occasionally the business aspects feel stressful. But I don’t tar roofs or work in a hospital, so I don’t really need a break from grueling and difficult labor. But that doesn't mean I don’t sometimes need a longer, deeper rest.

I’m taking one this week. I wrote this post in advance and scheduled it, so I wouldn’t need to worry about it while I’m off camping without cell reception.

While camping, I won’t write, I may read a bit, but mostly, I’ll be enjoying myself in non-work related activities in a gorgeous spot.

I hope that, no matter what sort of life you lead, you get enough rest.
