Queer Love
in troubling times
Hello friends,
What a strange Pride month it has been. Pride, where we celebrate the Black trans women and butch lesbians of the Stonewall Inn Uprising in New York City, who refused to be bullied by the repressive, bigoted laws anymore. And, earlier, the queer and trans community who gathered at Compton’s Cafeteria across the country in San Francisco. They also rioted for their rights.
We celebrate Pride now in their honor, because for too long we were told to hide in the shadows, fearful and ashamed.
Well, I don’t need to tell you about the times we currently live in, do I? Where trans women are still getting murdered, gay men are beaten in London, and several US states are trying to make being trans and queer illegal.
So, this month, I wrote about queer love, queer joy, and queer rage. I included a photo of my partner and I, taken at our wedding, on our 17th anniversary. Why? Because images of queer love are important right now. They are a raised fist or blandished middle finger to those who would erase us, yet again.
Here’s a snippet from my essay—Our Queer Love Will Not Die—though I hope you head over and read the whole thing:
Our queer agenda is: More love. More life. More joy.
Queer love looks like doing the dishes.
Queer love looks like puttering in the garden.
Queer love looks like eating cashew ice cream.
Queer love looks like reading books or watching movies.
Queer love looks like waiting in the emergency room.
Queer love looks like building a fire in winter.
Queer love looks like a child seeing themselves reflected in the world around them, and deciding they are beautiful…
Wishing you joy and love, wherever you may find it. We all need some these days.
Thanks for being here — Thorn
