On Winds
and standing still
Hello friends,
This morning, I awakened to powerful winds, rushing and howling. They batter the glass and set wind chimes to clanging.
Leaves dance in circles outside my windows, and hands tucked around a warm cup of tea, I think of everyone who slept outside last night. Breathing in and out, I feel grateful for the quiet moment before I start the rest of my day.
I have an interesting relationship with wind. It’s a bit of a love/hate sort of thing. There are places I think I would like to live: Edinburgh. Seattle. Yarmouth. Except they all have what I call “the icy wind of doom.” I do not like the icy wind of doom. It feels too extreme. Too buffeting. I don’t dance with it, like the circling golden leaves. It steals my breath. Walking in that wind? It pushes and pulls, tugging and shoving like an insistent, overlarge dog.
But one thing I do love? Standing still in a powerful wind. It sweeps away all my worries and cares. Standing in the wind feels cleansing, leaving me refreshed, solid, centered, and feeling alive.
So today, my meditation on these winds is:
Sometimes in order to move, you need to stand perfectly still.
We have to know what our relationship is to both the inner and outer landscape. We have to learn how to work with our lives, both with our preferences and challenges.
Somedays? Yeah. We have to walk into the wind. But other days?
We need to stop fighting so hard and just stand still.
We might even find ourselves dancing.
best wishes - Thorn
