On Time and Spells

for the coming year

Hello friends,

Well, another (Gregorian) calendar year winds down.

We humans like to mark time. We notice the tangible markers, like leaves changing, lines on faces, the exact tilt of the sun across floorboards, or the growth of plants, puppies, children and ideas.

We also note the intangibles—the made up markers of time—like the ticking of a clock, or dates on a calendar set by humans so many generations ago we can think that this is how it has always been. Each culture has these intangibles that knit communities together by saying, “Here is where we celebrate, and here is where we mourn. This is a beginning, and this is where things end.”

As a magic worker, some markers have more meaning to me than others. I feel the Solstices and Equinoxes in my breath and bones, my body responding to temperature and light, adjusting its pace to the pace of the seasons. There are few human markers that I honor, and for some reason, the turning of the Gregorian calendar is one of them.

So, this year, I devised a spell to share. It went out to my Patreon supporters first, but now I offer it to you.

Here’s how it begins:

Gather as many leaves or seed cones as your hands can hold.

Inhale. Pause. Exhale. Pause.

Imagine what you wish to call in to your life, your communities, this world.

You can read the rest of it on my website: A Spell for the Turning Year.

I have many things planned for 2024, including a year-long magical working to invoke the Star, with Laura Tempest Zakroff. I have books to write and things to share.

In the midst of it all, I want to give thanks for you, being here.

Wishing you a good year to come — Thorn

Friends, I’m still researching and exploring where I want to host this newsletter. Perhaps I’ll write a separate post about my thoughts… I thank you for your patience as I work things out.
