On Iced Mochas

and intuition

Hello friends,

A small thing happened yesterday that got me pondering intuition once again. When I was teaching full time, one of the things I would practice with my students was training our intuition. This is something I’ve done myself for years, that was partially inspired by the work of psychic Sonia Choquette.

The more we follow through on our intuition, the better it shows up for us. I probably have a hundred stories about this. Another happened yesterday.

The first thing to know about this story is that I’m not a coffee drinker. And, pre-Covid, I used to get out of the house and work in cafes several times a week. I no longer am in that habit, but I still go for almost daily walks, and I try to stop in a neighborhood cafe to get treats for our household once a week or so, to help keep the cafe in business. Small neighborhood businesses are important to me.

But yesterday? My plan was to go to a park. But something told me I should go get iced mochas. I even tried to talk myself out of it. I didn’t particularly want an iced decaf mocha (I hear all you coffee purists groaning. Hah! I torture you with the thought of decaf!). But my intuition insisted, so I laced up my shoes and headed toward the cafe.

After a pleasant conversation with the baristas, I headed on my way, carrying the two iced drinks. Steps from the cafe, a person with a skateboard stopped me. They were one of those “can’t tell how old because they’ve likely had a hard life” people. White, shaggy hair, sunglasses, likely in their early 30s.

“Do you have a couple of dollars for coffee?” they asked.

“I can buy you a coffee,” I replied. I’m not against giving folks money for whatever they want it for, but wasn’t sure if I had cash in my wallet, and the cafe was literally right there. I bought the person their coffee—quad Americano with sugar and cream—and a lemon muffin they said sounded good. We wished each other well, and I headed home.

That’s when it struck me: my intuition told me to head to the cafe because someone there needed a drink and some food. If I hadn’t listened, I wouldn’t be telling you this story right now.

How often do you listen to your intuition? What happens when you do?

best wishes - Thorn
