On Full Moons

and light barely seen

Hello Friends,

Each full moon I do some meditation or ritual. Last night was no exception. My meditation and brief ritual were very powerful and satisfying, but… I like it best when I can stand outside, staring at the full moon, at least for a few minutes.

Last night there was too much cloud cover to see the moon. I checked twice. Then, after my meditation, something compelled me to check again.

And there it was, barely visible behind a towering Douglas fir, filtered through clouds.

Douglas fir at night, barely lit clouds behind it.

The full moon.

It was beautiful. It also got me thinking: How often are we so enmeshed in what we cannot see or perceive—in the lack of something—that we forget to perceive what is present? Sometimes the effects of light, or beauty, or presence, are subtle.

Can we train ourselves to be open to perception nonetheless?

When things feel hard, or dark, or uncertain, or unknown, I like to pause, take a breath, and perceive again.

Sometimes there is light, shining faintly from a far distance. And sometimes that feels like enough.

Wishing you all good things, and a moment of light.
