Magic, Magic

everywhere

Hello friends,

If you’ve read my Seashell Cove cozy mysteries, you know I love magical creatures. Gnomes. Centaurs. Ghosts. Sprites. They all populate my little fictional seaside town on the Oregon Coast.

Well, yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting a new magical denizen here in Portland. It’s a giant troll named Olle Bolle, crafted by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

Set among tall fir trees the troll—and the little house he peers into—is made of old used pallets. Along with scrap wood that makes up his face and fur, the troll is made of pure magic.

Magic begins in the imagination.

Every child is filled with this magic until outside influences grind it out of them. Some of us fight to retain this sense of magical wonder and grow up to plant gardens, write songs, or create in other ways.

These days, it can feel hard to retain a sense of wonder and whimsy. It can feel difficult to remember that there is still magic all around us, every time we pause to look. But imagination is still important. So is magic and a sense of wonder.

Imagination comes before building. We must continuously imagine the world we wish to inhabit.

I was charmed by Olle Bolle, and am so grateful to the artist for bringing this magic our way. What is something magical you’ve experienced lately? I’d love to read about it.

best wishes — Thorn
