It's the Small Things...

that refill the creative well

Hello friends,

In a world filled with large events, it’s the small things that keep us going: The cup of tea. The hint of birdsong. An hour of story that takes us to another world…

It can be easy to get caught up in global troubles, personal struggle, and family or work worries. All of that is valid, of course. But pain is never the whole story, is it?

New Orleans musician Johnny B. Ill commented recently that he appreciates my eye. I replied that noticing small things is part of what keeps me connected to this world. Noticing also keeps me connected to a sense of gratitude and joy.

One thing I try to notice—and connect to—is creativity in all its forms. This helps me do what Julia Cameron calls “refilling the well.”

Just as drinking water is important for our bodies, drinking in creativity is important for mind, heart, and soul.

Creativity is bursting everywhere: A chickadee repurposed a slowly decaying finch nest on our front porch and is brooding over eggs in her newly refurbished home. Bees pollinate the lavender. Vegetables grow. Irises burst past fenceposts. Music streams from cars. Art appears on buildings overnight. A dropped lug nut burrows into tarmac, becoming a mini-sculpture for anyone who chances to look down.

I hope you are noticing the small things this week. I hope you are taking in some things that refill the parched places in yourself.

Care to share what you are creating, or what is creating you?

Blessings - Thorn
