February Enters

soft and warm

keep breathing

Hello friends,

January felt hard to me, and to a lot of people I know. Creativity was hard to come by. There were moments of peace, and even joy, but they were scattered throughout hours of grief, exhaustion, anger, and for some of us, a sense of defeat.

And then February dawned. Sun poked its head out after ice and snow and rain. Sunrises are so spectacular that my phone camera can in no way do them justice.

The Goddess Brigid has arrived, in Portland Oregon, at least. And I am filled with gratitude for that. It’s a time of poetry. A time to invoke—in the Northern hemisphere—the liminal space between winter and spring. A time to invoke promise and potential.

I’d like to share an old poem with you, that I wrote in 2007…

Bright Brigid’s Voice Flame, cupped by a hand in darkness. "Gaze into the well, my children. What will you see?" A voice from long ago rises Through the night’s dark, lonely vigil. The flickering of lives moves out Across the water. Shadow and strange glimmering, Possibility and ways against decided. The future lies... In a breath. A strengthening of spine. Touched by the Gods, or your own way paved? Shoulders shrug, you are a tool, in gladness serving: Till a field, teach a child, ladle soup, build a world. Fire and water. Earth and air. Life your forge, and spirit wrought you. As you are, what will you be? Anvil and blow, melt and harden. Years have formed you, seeking soul shape. What destiny shall wield a life? What life shall steer a fate?

No matter what the world sends us, we can still choose to “till a field, teach a child, ladle soup, build a world.” And we must keep finding ways to do this with each other. I put my trust in us.

Wishing you a good February, wherever you are.
