The Creative Impulse

helps us all

keep breathing

Hello friends,

We are in the midst of intense solar flares right now. This morning, alongside the news, I saw image after image of the aurora borealis, seen in places it has never been seen before, captured by ordinary people on their phone cameras.

In my recent essay on the harrowing state of the world, I wrote this line: We can look to the bees, pollinating the next season, working together to create sweetness.

Nature, you see, is always somewhere in the cycle of creation. Pollination. Seeding. Growth. Ripening. Decay. The fallow periods of quiet and rest.

Life itself is an act of creation and slow destruction. Every day, we get to choose what we will create and what we will destroy. All of us know this, somewhere, deep inside, though some of us have forgotten.

What does it take to remind us that within us all rests the spark of creativity? What does it take to remind us that we need to create? Something. Anything. A snatch of music. A bit of garden. A loaf of bread. A painting. A letter. A snapshot. A doodle on a page. One single word…

Is that reminder found in astonishing colors appearing in the night sky? Is that reminder found in a book that gives us comfort? Is that reminder found in the sound of bees, busy at their work?

We need to expand our idea of creativity, because creativity is all around us, right now. It is not just the purview of those whom we call artists.

We are all creators.

What are you creating this week? What do you want to create? What will you create? And how does this connect you to the world?

best wishes - Thorn
